Beat Fever

Multiple features overview.

Overview

Beat Fever is a rhythm game where you tap the screen in time with the music to complete the game level. You can play songs from popular artists, play different game modes (solo and with friends), participate in events, and level up your character.

Below is an overview of some features I was working on as a designer for Beat Fever project.

My role

Full-stack UX/UI Designer, UI Artist

As a full-stack designer I was working on several new features, as well as redesigns; helped to define and maintain visual style. I provided mentorship to interns and run user tests for new features.

Character Creation Redesign

Feature Overview

At the very beginning of the game, players are prompt to create an avatar that would represent them in the game. Every aspect of the character is customizable: from body and face features to outfit.

Problem

Current Character Creator is a linear process with more than 10 steps. Players have to go through all of them even though they want to change just a couple of features. Also, they don’t know how many steps are left. User testing shows, while generally, players like to customize their characters, they do not want to spend too much time on it before the game actually starts.

Solution

  • The flow was reorganized to have all customization happening on the same page with the ability to review changes altogether.
  • Randomize Button was added allowing players to choose a character from presets and skip deep customization.
  • Optional ability to name the character was created at the end of the customization flow.

Challenge Mode

Challenge mode is one of the game modes that require meeting specific goals to complete the game. I was designing challenge types and challenges behavior during the game as well as end-game screens

End Game, Leaderboard

One of the game modes allows players to compete with friends in weekly challenges. The end game screen would contain a leaderboard with the additional ability to invite friends into the game and challenge them.

Play Buttons Redesign

Entry points to the game levels are Play buttons – highly rendered visual assets that contain information about the game mode, song to be played. I designed visuals of the assets as well as UX behavior.

Locked Banners

Several game objects and zones have requirements for unlocking. Tapping on them opens up full-screen banner that provides information for unlocking as well as rewards to be gained.
